BARRIO

MEXICAN CUISINE
barriologo

Barrio celebrates high-end Mexican street food and tequila.  It was important while we worked on the now four locations that they remain consistent while all offering a slightly new view on the cuisine. The Barrio locations feature weathered steel or copper bar-tops and worn wood accents to create a fancy, but comfortable atmosphere. A signature, one-of-a-kind metal bull is spotlighted in three of the restaurant’s locations.

BOROUGH

NEW AMERICAN CUISINE

The owners of Borough contacted us to help design the accents of their bar. During demolition we discovered an old ink dispensing machine that looked like a vintage soda fountain. This became our inspiration for their expansive beer tap. We made custom tap handles for each of the sixteen taps. The tap tower itself sits atop of a custom built decorative zinc bar top. The bar’s knee-wall was made from reclaimed barn wood with an aluminum reveal. We used the same reclaimed wood to create both of the chef’s table tops. The bases for the tables were designed with the concept of  turn-of-the-century drafting tables in mind.

SENOR WONG’S

FUSION RESTAURANT

The Senor Wong dragon began as an idea to do something eye-catching for a newly opened fusion restaurant. This bold, custom sign is located on the corner of Robert and Kellogg, high above a bustling strip of down town Saint Paul. It functions not only as a sign but also as a sculpture, and who doesn’t notice a twenty-six foot dragon coiled up on a building?

BAR LA GRASSA

laGrassalogo

ITALIAN CUISINE

The owners of Bar La Grassa wanted a monolithic zinc covered pasta bar to separate their kitchen and dining area. We were happy to help. The zinc theme shows up again in the cocktail bar top, as well as in the wine glass holders that we built to tie the bars together. Finally, we clad the venue’s doors in steel and aged them to mimic a vintage fire door.

• Custom wine glass holders
• Unique pop-up tables
• Steel doors with custom age-effects

SMACK SHACK

LOBSTER, SHRIMP AND SAUSAGE

A little known issue with lobster boils is that the cooks always have to reach over the boiler to get the lobster….. Never more! With the Smack Shack we engineered the worlds first Lobster-Go-Round!  This revolutionary contraption rides the brim of the boil kettle on food-safe sealed bearings, allowing the cook to easily sort through our unlucky friends as they are cooked to perfection.  We were also asked to create a signature art piece for the large space. The initial idea was to craft lobsters frozen in carbonite. After a few different trials at how we go about doing this we came up with a refined, smart, yet muted piece where white on white lobsters are framed as subtle pop art. Finally, the zinc bars seemed a natural choice as they were historically first used in oyster bars, and the design of the Smack Shack bar was inspired by the original east coast seafood scene.

BELLY TANKER

CUSTOM BUILD

In the late 1930’s  a bunch of guys realized that sticking a hot-rodded car inside of an old fuel tank from a plane will allow you to be more aerodynamic,  and to go much faster. Over the years, many of these cars were brought out to the salt flats in order to test these theories. I wanted to pay homage to these amazing, fast, machines by building a stationary piece that looks like it might break a few records itself! While this bench may not be smoldering fast, it makes up for it with comfort.

CORSET BENCH

CUSTOM BUILD

Arguably one of the most infamous pieces of woman’s clothing has inspired arguably one of my favorite pieces that I’ve built. The two mahogany flanks of wood are tied together by an intricate stainless lattice that pulls the two pieces together. The base is a stainless steel truss that speaks more to the visual language of bridge arches.  The frame delicately supports the weight that the corset so elegantly hides.

TATTOO TABLE

CUSTOM BUILD

The idea behind the Tattoo table was for a modern, and subversive spin on the nesting table. Have you ever been to the dog park and seen dogs sniffing around each other? And have you ever been to a bar and seen people showing each other their tattoos?  This table takes that mating dance to a functional place, where these two small tables seem far more interested in each other then in the rest of the world.
